CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Gerald Greybeard
Canon: The Wizard's Tower (HBO TV)
Canon point: S5E10, after the death of his father
Age: 847
History: Wiki
Suitability: Gerald is a powerful and ancient wizard who has spent his whole life honing his magical talents to protect himself against the encroaching Darkness which threatens to destroy his world. Is this a re-app? No
Inventory:
- His pet lizard, Jeremy
- A handgun and 20 bullets
Powers, abilities and/or inhuman traits:
Prehensile beard
Gerald has a 5m long beard of silky smooth grey hair that he can control with his magic and which acts as an extra limb. He can use it to pick up objects or people no heavier than twice his body weight, or to wrap around others and pull them closer to him. The beard can be cut with sharp objects as with regular hair. If it is cut, he can grow it to its full length again with another regain.
Lightning magic
- Level 1: Gerald can summon small bursts of lightning from his hands, which have a maximum reach of 10m and will temporarily stun one enemy for one minute.
- Level 2: Gerald can summon larger bursts of lightning from his hands, which have a maximum reach of 20m and will send up to three enemies flying back from him at once. They will also be stunned for 30 minutes.
- Level 3: Gerald can summon large bolts of lightning from his hands, which have a maximum reach of 50m and will send up to five enemies flying back from him at once. They will also be stunned for an hour.
- Level 4: Gerald can summon bolts of lightning from his hands, or from the sky if the distance of his target is greater than 50m. He can burst standard enemies (excluding his Manifestation) into an explosion of viscera, killing them permanently.
MANIFESTATION
Character flaws/traumas:
Gerald is very prideful. As a child he was accepted into a prestigious magical academy within the Wizard's Tower, where he has been honing his magical abilities ever since. When he was 15, he was informed that he would one day become powerful enough to defeat the Darkness that has been poisoning his world for millennia. As such, he's incredibly convinced of his own importance and believes himself to be something of a 'Chosen One'. This makes him irascible, difficult to deal with and dismissive of others, while his pride also blinds him to his numerous other flaws and makes him capable of being truly cruel to others because he doesn't believe they are as strong or important as him.
Gerald is obsessed with destroying the Darkness at the expense of everything else. Several millennia ago, Gerald's world was infested with a powerful Darkness, which began to seep into all facets of life and destroy life as its inhabitants knew it. The Darkness makes soil fallow and causes many terrible diseases, as well as poisoning the minds of rulers to make them cruel and dictatorial, obsessed with accumulating wealth at the expense of the citizens. Ever since he was small, Gerald has been determined to destroy the Darkness and save his world. This means he has made almost no important interpersonal relationships, and is a very lonely man, driven exclusively by his obsession. He lost his brother to the effects of the Darkness when he was a boy, and so his determination to destroy it is also a personal one, motivated by revenge.
His biggest trauma is without a doubt the recent death of his father Greg, especially since Gerald believes it was his fault. For several years he had been honing a specific and very dangerous branch of magic, Light magic, which he believed would combat the Darkness most effectively, though this was at the expense of his own health, which began to dwindle as he poured more of his power into this form of magic. Greg urged him to take better care of himself and stop pushing himself too far in his quest to destroy the Darkness, but Gerald didn't listen. At this point Greg revealed that Gerald's mother Sally, who Gerald thought had been killed by the Darkness when he was small, was actually still alive. Sally was absent from Gerald's life because she had also tried to harness Light magic in her youth, and had become so debilitated by its effects that she could no longer look after her family and had to be treated by healers for the rest of her life. Gerald and Greg argued following this revelation, and Greg left the Wizard's Tower to return with Sally and convince Gerald to stop trying to use Light magic. However, during this journey, Greg was killed by the Darkness. Gerald witnessed this from his crystal ball within the Wizard's Tower.
Manifestation name: Consumed Greg
Character trait(s) the Manifestation reflects: The Manifestation reflects Gerald's trauma over his father's death most clearly, in appearance and theme. However, it also encapsulates the concept of Gerald's obsession with destroying the Darkness, as the Darkness has in some form followed him into Rhodos.
Description: Consumed Greg is a 6'5" humanoid shape of pure blackness with no discernible facial features, though it has the shape of Gerald's father, notably his tall and pointed wizard's hat, long robe, which slithers along the ground behind him, and a gnarled walking staff.
Attacks and behavior: When close enough to a character, Consumed Greg casts a darkness in front of the character's eyes to restrict their vision almost entirely, until they can't even see their hands in front of their face. Consumed Greg brings with it a sense of overwhelming helplessness and pointlessness, like death is coming and there is nothing to stop it. It will cause this feeling in any other characters nearby. In terms of attacks, Consumed Greg mostly uses melee attacks, hitting characters with his staff and sending them flying away from him. Fighting Consumed Greg is difficult because of the blindness it forces characters to experience, leading to a sense of confusion and disorientation.
Path towards resolution: The fact that Gerald's father died very recently means that Gerald's response to his Manifestation will be extremely irrational: he's likely to be angry, self-destructive and plain terrified, and will therefore act out dangerously and possibly hurt others in his desperation. The first time he sees his Manifestation, he might even be frozen in fear, unable to adequately attack it because it too closely resembles his father.
To resolve his Manifestation, Gerald would first have to accept that his father's death was not directly his fault, even though it was Gerald's obsession with harnessing Light magic which ultimately led to his father leaving the safety of the Wizard's Tower. Also, he would have to come to terms with the fact that he cannot defeat the Darkness alone, and that it is only through collaboration with others that he even has a chance. He will need to learn to work with other people instead of pushing them away, and stop believing that he is the only one who has the power to end the Darkness once and for all.
